November 3, 2023

Exceptional Storm Causes Extensive Damage

TRIESTE, Italy - An unprecedented storm surge has devastated the coastal town of Barcola in northeastern Italy. The surge, which struck on Friday, November 3, 2023, is the most violent to hit the area in over four decades.

The storm, characterized by relentless winds and high waves, caused widespread flooding and damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. The iconic Barcola Pier was particularly hard hit, with sections of the structure collapsing into the sea.

Authorities report that the surge reached a peak height of 17 meters in the city of Grado, while in Trieste, the Costiera Road and Barcola promenade were severely damaged. The storm also caused significant erosion along the shoreline, threatening the stability of several buildings.

Emergency crews are currently working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide aid to those affected. Residents are being urged to stay away from affected areas and heed any warnings from local officials.
